Mangrove ecosystems provide important product opportunities for coastal communities in Myanmar. Unfortunately, the rapid development of large scale aquaculture has contributed to massive deforestation across whole Southeast Asia. This is one of the major drivers of mangrove losses. The key for thriving livelihoods and healthy mangrove ecosystems lies in the development of sustainable aquaculture projects that benefit the communities and prevent further logging. Therefore, our partner Worldview International Foundation is integrating an aquaculture component into their project strategy. In February 2018, 41 women received aquaculture plots, to start growing their own clams. The clams have a high economic value and are widely accepted both locally and on the international markets. The flesh can be eaten raw, boiled or smoked.
