First in Myanmar with Mangrove Blue Carbon credit issuance
Our partner Worldview International Foundation (WIF) has pioneered many sustainable development projects in its 48 years history. The latest is the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) verification of its 2200 Ha mangrove restoration project in Myanmar with total 3.5 million tons CO2 mitigation. This is first time in Myanmar a mangrove/blue carbon project has succeeded to reach this milestone.
The project started with 3 years research in 2012 and has thereafter developed into a high quality project in support of the Paris Climate Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals with 6 million trees planted during the first phase. Its 86% high success record of plant survival is far above the average 50%.
The project works in close cooperation with coastal communities in restoring destroyed forests and substantially increase income for the poorest section of the society. 70% of the field staff are women with special training in mangrove restoration.
WIF aims at restoring 100,000 Ha of destroyed mangrove forests in Myanmar in the next 15 years and will start planting in India and Indonesia in 2019. Its goal is to plant over 1 billion mangrove trees mitigating 500 million tons CO2 and improve the lives of over 10 million people in vulnerable coastal communities. Mangrove trees mitigate up to 5 times more CO2 than terrestrial trees, increase fish resources with up to 50% and protects lives and properties from cyclones and other extreme weather. In addition it produces life bearing eco system services.
Mangrove restoration is the most cost-effective method in mitigating climate change.
